  1. What are the rules?
    1. No more than 3 pictures a day
    2. Do not post more than 2 pictures in a row and 3 pictures in one day, especially quickies. It pushes other people's pictures off of the front page so it is VERY rude. Posting more pictures DOES NOT get you more positive comments. It will only get you more "Stop it, you loser" comments. It is okay to do quickies if you are good at them, but even then you should not do more than two in a row.
If you just want to post tons of doodles all day, you can check out the beginner boards on Oekaki Central or Google for a doodling board.
    3. Be considerate
    4. Don't say things like "You suck" or "Your picture is ugly"... tell them how to improve instead. If you DO get constructive criticism, just accept it. Don't insult the person who is giving you their opinion. Support the "newbies"... We were ALL newbies, once.
    5. Don't whine and angst!
    6. This sounds harsh, but PLEASE do not GUILT people into giving you comments with the "My picture is horrible! I am soooo depressed! I'm going to kill myself!" routine. We do love you, but we also don't know you, so please go to family and friends for such issues. When you're feeling better, come back and share ART, not ANGST.
    7. No text-only, animation-only, "Test" posts, or "I lost my picture! :-(" posts
    8. Do not post a picture with only text; unless it's some beautiful work of calligraphy, we'd really rather see you drawing a PICTURE.
Do not post a seemingly blank picture that is all for the animation; a blank canvas is a blank canvas, regardless of whatever's in the animation. To prevent your picture from being deleted, please draw something at the very end of your animation.
Only the admins are allowed to post "test" pictures (which they will ALWAYS delete afterwards). As a normal user, you cannot post a picture to test out some aspect of the painting applet or oekaki. If you are worried the oekaki is not submitting your post, you may try to post a picture to try it out but delete it afterwards if you did not mean to draw it seriously.
If you DID lose a picture, please do not post a picture stating the fact that you did. If it is a decent replacement picture, that is fine, but a giant sad face is NOT acceptable.
    9. No hardcore yaoi/yuri/slash/porn
    10. Shounen-ai and Shoujo-ai are okay, since they are MILD and usually only involve hugs or kisses. Things SUGGESTIVE of sex are okay, but you cannot illustrate the actual act. Please refer to "What is considered an Adult Picture?" We have to make sure the board is safe for all.
    11. Finish unfinished pictures
    12. Not that we will immediately delete unfinished pictures... but please don't keep the viewers in suspense for too long! Leave a note if you don't plan on finishing a picture... we understand. Unfinished pictures will be erased once they reach page 5.
... and that is all! Wasn't that easy?
  2. What is considered an Adult Picture?
  3. An adult picture is anything that is only suitable for 18+ viewing. This includes nudity or anything of a sexual or explicit nature. If you are drawing such a picture, please tag it with an adult flag when posting your comment. If you cannot view adult pictures and would like to see them, you must enter "Administration" and edit your profile, and make sure the "Adult Picture" checkbox is marked.
Admins can NOT edit adult flags, so if your picture is plainly an adult picture and you did not flag it, IT WILL SIMPLY BE DELETED.
  4. Someone is OBIVIOUSLY disregarding the rules!
  5. Send all reports of rule-breakers to an admin and they will do what they can.
  6. I NEED MORE HELP! / Who are the admins?
  7. Owner/Super Admin: Retro
Please send messages through the oekaki message system, if possible. Otherwise, send an e-mail and make sure you give your oekaki username.
  8. I can't see/start the drawing applet!
  9. First, make sure your internet options allow you to view Java applets. If the settings allow you to but you still can't see the drawing applet, try downloading the Sun Java Runtime Environment, or JRE at http://java.sun.com/getjava/. If that does not work, and you are using Windows, try going to Windows Update and download the MicrosoftVM. A lot of this is computer and browser specific, so feel free to ask an admin about it.
  10. How do I start drawing? / How do I comment on pictures?
  11. To be able to draw or comment, you must first register using a valid e-mail addres. You must be able to receive an e-mail sent to you by the oekaki and click on a link in that e-mail to activate your account. Once you are registered, a "Comment" link will appear in the top right corner of every picture post: click that to comment. You can begin drawing by selecting an option under the "Draw" link at the very top of the page. If you don't see the "Draw" link, please contact an admin.
  12. What's a collab? / How do I work on a collab?
  13. A collab is a picture that multiple people help finish. For instance, one person could do the lineart and another person could color it in. BD Oekaki supports collab pictures with an unlimited number of collaborators, though you are not allowed to have a free-for-all collab without asking permission from an admin first.

HOW TO DRAW ON A COLLAB:
    1. Get the collab password from the person who started the collab.
    2. Enter the password in the text box underneath the collab and GO!
    3. Post a comment when you are done!

    HOW TO START A COLLAB:
    1. Get a "Collab Starter" flag from Retro (ask and you shall receive!).
    2. Draw a picture like normal using Shi-Painter or Shi-Painter Pro. You are encouraged to use the animated versions, since they will save your layer information (very helpful for collabs), but you can do non-animated if you wish.
    3. When you go to post the first comment, there will be a "Collab password" box. Type some easy-to-remember word or phrase here and post your comment.
    4. Send the collab password to your collaborator(s)!

Do NOT start free-for-all collabs where you post the password publicly and allow everyone on the oekaki to work on it. These are usually not serious and scribbly, so they are disrespectful to people who post serious works on the oekaki. However, the oekaki IS meant to be fun, so it is okay to have these once in a while. Please ask an admin for permission to start one if you wish to do a free-for-all collab.
  14. My picture didn't post / I wasn't able to comment, and lost my picture.
  15. Your picture is not lost. Go to Administration > Recover pics to recover your lost pictures. Your information is still saved on them, including the time it took for you to draw it!
  16. Why can't I immediately see my updated picture when I re-touch it?
  17. We really have no idea. It could be just the browser cache retaining the former picture; try refreshing the page.
  18. What drawing applets are available?
  19. Currently, you can post pictures using PaintBBS v2.22_8, OekakiBBS v2.64, and Shi-Painter 1.081.
Shi-Painter offers advanced functions like layer transparency and... well, check it out. PaintBBS is the most light-weight and comes in a paletted version, if you are crazy about colors.
  20. I'm using the Animated PaintBBS / OekakiBBS. So how do I start animating?
  21. Just draw as you normally would. The applet will automatically track your movements and store it in a file!
  22. I want to delete one of my picture/comment posts.
  23. You can delete one of your OWN posts this way: Go to Administration > Local > Edit Pics. You will see a list of all of your recent pictures. Click "Delete" on the far right to delete a picture and the oekaki will ask you to confirm. If this doesn't work, ask an admin.
  24. How do I improve my drawings?
  25. I should make it clear that you do NOT need a tablet to draw great oekakis. I've seen MANY MANY artists do AMAZING things with just a mouse.
The old adage "Practice makes perfect" is true here. Drawing on the computer is not like drawing on paper, so you may find your first oekaki attempts to be worse than what you can do on paper. You simply need to get used to drawing on the computer.
Beyond that, you are free to ask for constructive criticism from other members of the oekaki. Just keep in mind that "constructive" isn't always NICE! Don't get angry or discouraged if you receive some negative criticism. Also, there are entire oekaki boards dedicated to improving your oekaki abilities, so you might want to hunt down one of those.
  26. The oekaki looks really messed-up / My browser isn't displaying the oekaki correctly. / Where are the menus?!
  27. Assuming that you aren't insulting my layout-designing skillz, this could be caused by your internet settings or an incompatible browser. First, make sure you are using the latest version of your preferred browser (see below for links). Then, make sure your browser is set to allow JavaScript! The fate of the universe oekaki depends on it.
The oekaki should work with the latest edition of any browser. Specifically, I have tested the oekaki on Windows with Firefox 1.0+ and Internet Explorer 6+, and on Mac OSX with Safari 2.0, Internet Explorer 5, Shiira, Camino 0.8, and Opera 8.01 (yes, I am slightly obsessive). It should also work with the latest versions of Mozilla and Netscape. What other browsers could you kids possibly use?
  28. I lost my password!
  29. You can recover your password here.
  30. How can I send a message to someone?
  31. Click on the user's name to open up their profile, and click on send a message. You must be logged into your account to send messages.
  32. What is an archive?
  33. When the picture limit is reached, OP will recycle through the picture count starting at 0. Archiving a picture will prevent it from being overwritten by this process. Only administrators can do this.
  34. Can my account get deleted? / My account got deleted!
  35. If your account is deleted, all of your images and data will be erased and unrecoverable! You can, however, register a new account in that name.
At the top of this page, you will notice the words "Inactive accounts will be deleted in ## days!" If you do not visit this oekaki in that many days, your account will be deleted! This is done automagically by the oekaki itself, but the oekaki will send you an e-mail warning BEFORE it deletes your account. To make sure you receive the e-mail, keep your e-mail in your profile up-to-date!
Alternatively, if you know you won't be able to visit the oekaki for 100 days, contact an admin about getting an immunity flag. Accounts with an immunity flag will never be automatically deleted (they can only be deleted by the admins).
  36. I have a website at Geocities/Tripod/some free website provider, can I set up an oekaki there?
  37. While you CAN, it doesn't always work that well. Lots of people set up boards on Lycos, but Lycos LOADS them with ugly ads and has been known to delete accounts. Oekaki boards require many options the average free host doesn't give you, namely: support for CGI or PHP and MySQL. If you don't know what those are, please forget setting up your own oekaki. Oekaki boards are also memory and bandwidth intensive. All of this means that you should have a dedicated PAID webhost and space if you want to run a successful oekaki. Otherwise, I believe there are websites out there that do nothing but host oekaki boards for free... they also come with ads, but you should look into them.
  38. Retro, can you set up my oekaki?
  39. DISCLAIMER: I'M NOT GOOD AT CGI/PHP/MySQL! If you have questions about setting up OekakiPoteto, the best place to go is the Suteki.nu forums. You can also Google very good instructions, if the instructions that CAME with your oekaki don't work.
I won't set up other people's boards, but if you have a few questions or issues or you want me to check out your board, feel free to contact me.
  40. Credits, acknowledgements, and thank yous
  41. BD Oekaki runs on OekakiPoteto v5.x by RanmaGuy and Marcello, with modifications made by myself based on Wax Poteto 5.5.1 by Waccoon. Notably, the Shi-Painter posting/editing files are Waccoon's, as well as some scattered coding throughout. Thus, I have to thank all of the above people who know far more scripting than I do. I also thank the makers of the Shi-Cyan, WonderCatStudio, and Poo for all their work on the drawing applets and their enhancements.
Finally, I gotta thank YOU for reading this stuff, and all of the patrons of the oekaki for making all the frustration worth it.
  42. What is OekakiPoteto?
  43. OekakiPoteto (horrible Japanese romanji conjugate of "Protect") is a PHP extension of the OekakiBBS and PaintBBS online painting applets where artists can draw and post their work online; it does not rely on OekakiBBS' picture.cgi (which can easily be hacked), and is more protected in the fact that it uses a private registration system for users to post pictures.
  44. Who is responsible for the development of OekakiPoteto?
  45. Theo Chakkapark/Chakkaphak (aka RanmaGuy) and Marcello. RanmaGuy is the main coder for OekakiPoteto, while Marcello has written the parsing code for the OekakiBBS and PaintBBS applets, as well as the PaintBBS hack to allow retouching. Travis coded the ban script used in OekakiPoteto to keep the evil people away. Special thanks goes to Uriel for providing development space for OekakiPoteto, as well as providing us with detailed bug reports.
  46. Where can I get my own FREE OekakiPoteto?
  47. You can get the latest version of OekakiPoteto at suteki.nu.
